It is hard to believe that this time last year I planned my birthday (last minute) at the Nash. This year, I was convinced that I was going to stay inside all day and relax. I had planned nothing except keeping my new baby alive. Little did I know that a surprise birthday dinner was being planned for me by my husband.
The day started out normally: In the morning I dropped off my daughter at preschool and sent out some online orders. In the afternoon I headed to the store to fill a prescription and asked my husband to help me take some Christmas themed pictures for an OOTD (which I may or may not post later). While we were taking photos my husband got a call from someone claiming that he won a free dinner for two at some Korean restaurant I had never heard of.
This should have been a clue to what was happening. I did mention weeks earlier I would love to go for Korean BBQ for my birthday. Of course, I had forgotten about mentioning that to him, so I was convinced this phone call was a scam. What can I say? I tend to be suspicious of many things and many people:)
Anyway, if you know me you know that I never turn down free food. This time though I wasn’t quite sure that I wanted to go because I didn’t want to leave the girls at home and I was kind of tired. By the time we were headed home I had left my new baby girl home with her Auntie for almost 3 hours! I was suffering from withdrawal and my breasts were starting to leak!
I suggested that we go for dinner at 6 so that we could be home by 7:30 or 8. My husband said that the free dinner wasn’t until after 7. That should have been clue 2. What kind of stipulation is that?
When I mentioned dinner to my mom she said she would take care of the girls. I asked her if she wanted to come because I know she likes Korean too. She made some lame excuse why she couldn’t come and I thought nothing of it. I thought to myself “maybe it will be nice to get out of the house and spend time with Peter.”
We walk into the restaurant and turn the corner to our table. As I walk up to the table I see a bunch of my friends and honestly, the first thought that popped into my mind was a confused “I know these people…What are they doing here?”
Then they shouted SURPRISE
Oh my goodness! I was in shock. I hate surprises. My husband knows that! Even though I hate surprises I was both delighted and flattered that my husband and my friends would take time out of their Thursday evening to surprise me 🙂
All you can Eat Korean BBQ
My friend Matt was the one who introduced me to Korean BBQ a year or two ago and I have been in love ever since (as my husband was well aware). When the option of all you can eat was offered at this restaurant I was ecstatic. Now that I am breastfeeding my midwife suggested I consume at least 500 extra calories per day. All you can eat food would ensure I met that goal!
I didn’t have the time nor the inclination to take pictures of the meat, but the chicken and beef were really good.
When we were all done we had cake! Real, legit birthday cake. The kind of birthday cake that brings you back to the 90s birthday parties that took place at the swimming pool or Chuck E Cheese. The kind of cake I mentioned that I loved to my husband (*tear* he listens!).
How I felt
I have to say that I was really pleased that my husband went through all the effort to bring my friends together and organize a special night. I was surprised he listened to all the things I had said and used that information for my birthday party!
I’m not going to lie though, I felt duped. I was so shocked that my husband had kept this from me for God knows how long. I believe that if I hadn’t just given birth I would have been more alert to what was going on!
That being said I mostly felt quite loved since my husband went through all the trouble and that my friends came to celebrate another year of life with me. There is nothing like spending time with people in your life that truly care about you.
I love this card from my very good friend Meena. She has always had an interesting sense of humor! I thought I would share.
